Tips for your interview
The interview is not only an opportunity for us to get to know you, but also for
you to get to know us. The key to relaxing in an interview is to be well
prepared - know your CV and be prepared to talk about your attributes and
interests.
Preparation tips
- Talk to people you know at the firm or friends who have done clerkships
or worked at the firm.
- Visit the firm's website and the
careers page.
- Read the newspapers and note current projects and deals in which the
firm is involved and the firm's main clients.
- It's important to know your strong points and to have a good sense of
who you are. Know your strengths, achievements, interests and values. Work
out your career and personal objectives.
- Think about the questions you might be asked. The interviewers will want
to get to know you, so their questions will be based around your
application. Know your CV well and be prepared to talk about what's in it.
- Identify any points of interest or potential weaknesses in your CV.
Think about how you might respond to a question about them, such as failing
a subject, swapping courses mid-semester or leaving a part-time job.
- The interviewers will probably ask why you want to work at the firm.
Think about your reasons and how you might respond to this question.
- The interview not only provides the firm with the opportunity to get to
know you, but it is also an opportunity for you to learn more about the
firm. Think about the questions you would like to ask.
- Practise interviewing with someone you are comfortable with and who will
give you honest feedback.
On the day
- Give yourself plenty of time to get to your interview.
- Arrive 10 to 15 minutes early to allow time to calm any nerves and
collect your thoughts. Turn off your mobile.
- Collect your thoughts before you answer questions. It's preferable to
take some time to consider your response rather than rushing. Answer
questions honestly.
- Consider your body language.
- Ask questions and ask what you really want to know, not what you think
you should ask and listen to the answers provided.
After the interview
- Write down any key points about your interview. This is useful for
differentiation purposes if you are attending interviews at several firms.
Remember the interview is just as much an opportunity for you to get to know
the firm and decide whether you think you would enjoy working at the firm.
- Write down any further questions you may have - you may like to call
your interviewers with these follow up questions or ask them during a second
round interview.
