Tips for your application

Your application is an important document. It forms our first impression of who you are and plays a key role in the decision to interview you. With that in mind, we have provided a few tips on the application process.

Application cover letter

The purpose of the cover letter is to tell us a bit about you and why you want to work at Allens Arthur Robinson. We look for cover letters which are well written and concise - usually no more than a page is sufficient.

Some tips when preparing your cover letter:

  • Before submitting your application, double check the name and title of the person to whom you have addressed your application. Also check that you have not accidentally included the name of another law firm!
  • You may wish to highlight certain parts of your application. This may be useful, for example, if you have failed a subject for valid personal reasons or if you deferred study for a period of time.
  • Check your letter meticulously before submitting it. Spelling and grammatical errors create a poor first impression.

CV

Your CV should be set out clearly and concisely. Keep the format simple and use headings and bullet points. Your CV should typically include:

  • personal details;
  • secondary education including final year school results;
  • tertiary education including degree(s) held or currently being undertaken and tertiary institution details;
  • work experience (legal and non-legal) including voluntary work;
  • details of employment including position details, skills obtained and approximate number of hours worked per week;
  • extra-curricular activities including interests and hobbies; and
  • any language abilities.

Again, check your CV meticulously before submitting it.
