Sydney Children's Hospital Neurology Fellowship

The Allens Neurology Fellowship provides funding for a doctor already trained in paediatrics to receive intensive training in the field of paediatric neurology from world-class clinicians at the Sydney Children's Hospital in Randwick.

The Fellow provides advice to general practitioners, and is a crucial resource for doctors in rural and remote areas through the hospital's outreach program.

This year marks the 12th year of the Fellowship. In that time, the Allens Fellows have helped around 7000 young inpatients and outpatients with neurological problems, including epilepsy, brain tumours and cerebral palsy.

Dr Gaby Dabscheck

Dr Gaby Dabscheck, recipient of the latest Fellowship, learns on the job to develop his skills in the specialty area of paediatric neurology and to provide the highest possible standard of care to children with neurological conditions from all around NSW and beyond.

This means that Gaby sees patients like Makayla, who had her first epileptic fit when she was just five years old. Now eight, she continues to take medication and the hospital monitors her condition through regular check-ups.

Start quotationThe team of neurology staff have done everything they can to explain Makayla's epilepsy to us, even though there are still many unknowns surrounding the condition. I've never walked out of the Hospital feeling uncertain or unsure.End quotation

Hospital visits

Summer clerks Claudia Newman-Martin, Ryan Harvey, Dave Rountree and Dana Beiglari with a Sydney Children's Hospital patient and her mother

The Sydney Summer Clerk group was given a tour of the Sydney Children's Hospital in Randwick.

The visit gave the clerks a first-hand look at the impact of Allens' continued support of the hospital. After a short meeting with some of the hospital staff, the clerks were given a tour of the neurology ward and took the opportunity to talk with the patients and their families.
