John has acted for many years for a large number of banks, investment banks and other financial providers, as well as corporate borrowers. He provides exceptional client service, with a wealth of experience and a reputation for keeping advice concise and uncomplicated, together with rapid turnaround and commercial negotiating skills.
The range of John's financial practice is extensive. He acts for lenders and borrowers on transactions as diverse as multi-billion dollar off-shore facilities, structured finance, project finance (particularly in the mining industry), corporate finance, property finance and capital markets and also advises on consumer credit law compliance and documentation.
His major clients include Westpac, ANZ, CBA, Suncorp, Queensland Treasury Corporation, Queensland Investment Corporation and Queensland Department of Housing. He has drafted an extensive suite of standard loan, security, leasing, guarantee, facility and related documentation for a number of clients, as well as acting in numerous transactions, security enforcements, advising on policy and procedures, and, in some cases, negotiating legislation specific to his clients.
A sample of matters in which John has been involved recently include acting for Queensland Investment Corporation in bond issues and syndicated lending to private equity vehicles, project financing of mines in Queensland and NSW, takeover financing in the resources sector and debt funding relating to an IPO. He has drafted all Consumer Credit Code documentation and systems as well as conducting staff training for the Queensland Department of Housing. He has been involved in a range of receiverships and debt workouts (the largest involving more than $1.2 billion).
He lectured for many years at the Queensland University of Technology's Legal Practice Course.
John also has a significant commercial and property law practice. He is currently involved in leading a team of lawyers working on the development of a landmark Brisbane CBD project (One One One Eagle Street) and the sale of a large portfolio of resorts across Australia. He also advises a range of resources clients on issues, particularly in the areas of access, infrastructure and transport for the Queensland coal industry, where he acts for most of the principal coal producers in relation to export terminals and a range of issues associated with them.
