Allens continues expansion of Perth finance practice

6 February 2012

Responding to the growth in the market, Allens Arthur Robinson (Allens) is expanding its Perth finance practice via the transfer of Sydney Senior Associate Ben Farnsworth, effective 6 February 2012.

Simon Chan from Allen & Overy, London will also be joining the team as a Senior Associate in early March.

This growth follows the recent hire of banking specialist, Kerry Low, from Clayton Utz in Perth late last year.

Mr Farnsworth and Mr Chan will add to the existing strength of the Perth office's finance team, which is led by Partner Tim Lester with support from Partner Philip Blaxill.

Mr Lester said that the Perth office's workload is rapidly increasing as the local economy continues to prosper and cross-border investment and international capital flows continue to grow.

'The Perth finance team is currently acting on the Ichthys project, which involves the world's largest oil and gas project financing,' Mr Lester said.

'The team is working on a range of other high-profile financings in the energy, infrastructure, mining services and agribusiness sectors as well.

'Ben and Simon will complement our finance practice terrifically well and will provide us with greater resources and expertise to continue to support our clients' ever evolving needs.'

Before rejoining Allens in 2010, Mr Farnsworth worked at a leading US law firm in London. He has extensive experience acting on complex project finance, acquisition finance and corporate and structured finance transactions in Australia and overseas, and has acted for lenders and sponsors in a wide range of industries.

Mr Chan is returning to Perth after several years with Allen & Overy, specialising in cross-border structured finance and syndicated lending for a range of financiers and borrowers.

Banking & Financial Services Joint Practice Group Leader Nicky Andrews said that Ben and Simon will provide valuable additional experience to the Perth office, strengthening the services on offer to clients across the infrastructure, mining, power, water, oil and gas industries.

'As a senior lawyer, Ben will play a key role in helping to reinforce and broaden the team's capability as it continues to support some of the world's largest companies,' Ms Andrews said.

'The Perth Banking and Finance practice is already known for its ability to provide clients with expert advice in project, acquisition, asset, corporate and property finance, and the team's growth will enhance that reputation.'
