Allens and First Solar power Solar Flagships deal
13 June 2012
Allens has advised Nasdaq-listed solar module manufacturer First Solar in relation to its role as part of AGL Energy Limited's successful tender for the Federal Government's Solar Flagships Program.
The Solar Flagships Program, which supports the development of a range of solar energy projects and technologies, is offering funding to support the construction and demonstration of large-scale, grid connected solar power plants in Australia.
Under the program, First Solar will deliver to AGL Energy a 106 MW PV solar power plant in Nyngan and a 53 MW PV solar power plant in Broken Hill, both in New South Wales.
The Projects have a combined project value of approximately $450 million.
Construction is expected to begin on both projects in 2014, with commercial operations commencing in 2015.
According to Partner Anthony Arrow, who led the Allens team on the matter, First Solar will design and construct the integrated power plants and will also maintain both plants for AGL Energy.
'The projects will be supported with funding provided by the Federal Government and the NSW State Government,' Mr Arrow said.
'The projects, which will provide enough electricity to meet the needs of at least 30,000 Australian homes per year, are expected to generate about 450 jobs at peak construction.'
'It was especially pleasing to continue our work with First Solar on this major transaction that involves development of the largest utility scale solar power plants in Australia.'
