John Lehane passed away in 2001 after making a significant contribution to the study and practice of law in Australia. He commenced his legal career at Allen Allen & Hemsley in 1966, where he was a well-liked and respected partner from 1971 to 1995.

In 1995 he was appointed to the Federal Court of Australia and he served the community with distinction in that role until 2001.

John Lehane was highly regarded for his contribution to legal education and debate. He lectured at the University of Sydney for many years, published numerous papers and co-authored Australia's leading equity text.
