Allens Arthur Robinson leads the Thomson M&A adviser tables

3 January 2008

Allens Arthur Robinson dominated the announced Australasian mergers and acquisitions market in 2007, according to the Thomson Financial M&A Legal Advisor Review released today.

AAR advised the principal players on 79 announced deals in Australasia in 2007 at a total value of $240.6 billion.

AAR partner Ewen Crouch, co-head of AAR's M&A practice group, said: '2007 has been an extremely busy year for AAR and an extremely successful year for our clients. AAR's M&A team has had a hand in many of the major transactions taking place in the past year, including advising Rio Tinto in respect of the BHP Billiton approach.

'In 2007, we closed the two biggest deals in Australia's corporate history, Wesfarmers' acquisition of Coles and CEMEX's acquisition of Rinker, and we were involved in a number of other really significant deals including acting for Qantas and acting for Multiplex, OneSteel and Bendigo Bank in company transforming deals'.

The depth of our M&A team has helped us advise a range of clients across Australia and manage a number of complex and demanding deals in different places at the same time, Mr Crouch said.

Mr Crouch said he expected 2008 to continue to be a busy one for M&A activity in Australia. 'Companies are still looking for ways to build shareholder value, and this will hold true even as parts of the market start to show signs of stress. I think 2008 will be another major year for M&A deals in Australia.'
