Winner of Allens-sponsored art prize announced
8 May 2009
Sydney artist Rodney Pople has won the $20,000 NSW Parliament Plein Air Painting Prize, which is sponsored by Allens Arthur Robinson (Allens).
New South Wales Premier Nathan Rees and Allens Chairman Ewen Crouch awarded the prize to Marrickville artist Rodney Pople for his plein air artwork, St Mary's Cathedral at 4am.
In its second year, the prize is an acquisitive art competition aimed at developing a collection of plein air paintings featuring NSW locations for the people of NSW.
The winning piece beat out 29 other finalists to take home a prize which was described by Mr Crouch as 'recognising the very best of Australian plein air painting and one that continues Allens long-standing commitment to Australian art and artists'.
Mr Crouch told the 180 guests at the awards ceremony at the State Parliament that Allens' sponsorship of the award continued the firm's 30-year commitment to supporting Australian artists through both sponsorships and its own art collection.
'If we are to be creative and innovative in what we do, then we need to be surrounded by stimulating art work,' said Mr Crouch.
Mr Crouch congratulated Mr Pople on his prodigious talents and his choice of subject and time.
'One would have thought St Mary's Cathedral at 1pm may have been a far more pleasant and definitely more climatically kind time to be undertaking a landscape painting.
'But then, that's why Rodney's the artist and I'm the lawyer,' added Mr Crouch.
Originating in France in the 19th Century, en plein air translates into 'in the open air', whereby en plein air painting is the act of painting outdoors, engaging with nature.
