Sixty thousand drop in and try out for rugby tickets

24 September 2003

A young Queensland student has proved himself to be Australia's 'super boot' by beating 60,000 other contestants in Allens Arthur Robinson's (AAR) online rugby drop-kicking competition.

Corey Knight, a 20-year-old student from Brisbane, won two tickets to the opening match of Rugby World Cup 2003, after winning an online drop-kicking shoot-out that allowed players to take on one of the 20 teams taking part in the tournament. AAR is the official law firm of Rugby World Cup 2003.

His name was drawn randomly from a list of winners.

'In just over two months, more than 60,000 people have played what has turned out to be a suitably challenging online competition,' said AAR managing partner Tom Poulton. 'We have a very business-orientated website focusing on legal developments. Our involvement with Rugby World Cup 2003 gave us the opportunity to do something a little different.'

'Looking at the list of winners, it's clear a large number of our clients enjoyed the opportunity to play and the chance to win tickets. We're surprised at the large number of other people, including other international law firms, who also had a go,' said Mr Poulton. 'It illustrates the level of interest in the tournament as a whole.'

A link to the game appeared on the firm's website.

'People now have the chance to win tickets to the final of Rugby World Cup 2003 on November 22 by playing and we're hoping for a similar level of interest from clients and the public,' said Mr Poulton. The draw is on November 7.

Mr Knight said he was alerted to the game by a business colleague of his mother's, who then passed it on to him.

He managed to win the best of five drop kicking competition at his second attempt.

'The game was very challenging, having to adjust your drop kick according to the wind factor and then getting the timing right for the perfect kick was very realistic and enjoyable.

'I'll definitely be backing the Wallabies in the opening match against Argentina and for the rest of the World Cup. They have what it takes to win it all and no doubt they will clean up at home,' said Mr Knight, who has yet to decide whom he will take with him to the game.
