About Deborah Jackson

Deborah has specialised in intellectual property, in particular trade marks, for almost 10 years. She provides clients with legal services in respect of the following:

  • registration of trade marks and designs;
  • trade mark oppositions;
  • trade mark removal actions;
  • advocacy on behalf of clients at trade mark hearings, both ex parte and inter partes;
  • advice on trade mark infringement;
  • trade mark search clearances;
  • advice on branding issues and marking;
  • foreign trade mark filing and protection strategy and programmes,
  • conducting of due diligence for intellectual property;
  • advice on international law (including jurisdictional) issues.

Most recently, Deborah has acted for GPT, Westpac Banking Corporation, the Australian Olympic Committee, Las Vegas Sands Corp, Dairy Farmers, Singapore Airlines Limited, Capital Dynamics, Sun Microsystems, Jamba! GmbH, Adolf Wuerth GmbH & Co KG, WWF-World Wide Fund for Nature and in respect of the intellectual property of Frank Sinatra. Deborah has represented a number of Australian, European and United States pharmaceutical, information and technology, and financial and insurance clients, including at trade mark hearings.

Deborah also lectures part-time at postgraduate level in trade marks. Most recent articles include the Trade Marks Update for the February 2008 Australian Intellectual Property Law Bulletin. She also contributes or presents at seminars, including on the Madrid Protocol and Commercial Aspects of Intellectual Property. A former diplomat, Deborah also has an interest in public and private international law and has contributed to international law and international affairs publications. She is a member of the Intellectual Property Society of Austraila and New Zealand, the International Trademark Association, the International Bar Association, and the International Law Association. Deborah is bilingual in English and German.
