About Lauren John

Lauren acts for clients in both contentious and non-contentious matters involving all types of intellectual property, including patents, trade marks, designs and copyright, as well as matters concerning misuse of confidential information, misleading and deceptive conduct, and passing off.

Lauren has significant experience in patent law and patent litigation, having acted for numerous clients in patent infringement and revocation proceedings, as well as in patent matters concerning contractual obligations, duties relating to confidential information and inventorship disputes.

Lauren's recent experience includes:

  • acting in pharmaceutical and medical device patent litigation, including for Pfizer in relation to its blockbuster products Lyrica and Prevnar;
  • acting successfully in the first case in the world to rule that artificial intelligence systems can be named as inventors of a patent;
  • litigation concerning trade mark infringement, copyright infringement, and misleading and deceptive conduct;
  • advising on the enforceability and protection of intellectual property rights;
  • drafting, negotiating and advising on complex IP assignment and licensing arrangements;
  • advising on the intellectual property aspects of significant mergers, acquisitions, restructures and investments, including conducting complex due diligence.

Lauren was named as a Rising Star 2020 in Managing Intellectual Property's IP Stars.

Lauren gives back to the IP profession in her role as a member of the Victorian Local Committee of the Intellectual Property Society of Australia and New Zealand (IPSANZ).
