About Miriam Stiel
Miriam has over 25 years' experience as an intellectual property advisor and is the Practice Leader of the Allens Intellectual Property, Patents & Trade Marks Attorneys group. She works with Australian and multi-national corporations across the media and entertainment, manufacturing, financial services, sports and technology sectors to develop strategies for the protection, commercialisation and enforcement of their IP rights. Miriam also provides strategic brand protection and advertising advice, and handles the trade mark portfolios for some of Australia's and the world's most recognisable brands.
A highly regarded litigator, Miriam has acted in some of Australia’s most significant IP cases. Her IP litigation experience covers patents, copyright, trade marks, designs, breaches of confidential information, misleading and deceptive conduct, and passing off. She also handles product liability, defamation and contractual disputes. Miriam has extensive experience running and defending applications for urgent interlocutory relief and works closely with clients to develop strategies for managing risks, avoiding disputes and handling dispute-related publicity and is experienced in alternative dispute resolution.
Miriam draws on her extensive IP litigation experience to assist clients in structuring their IP arrangements and has substantial experience advising on the intellectual property aspects of corporate transactions and major projects, including complex, high-value transactions involving investments in, and acquisitions of, IP-rich businesses and challenging IP separation issues across a broad range of industries and sectors.
Miriam’s international reputation sees her consistently recognised as a leading practitioner by Chambers Asia Pacific, Legal 500 and World Trademark Review. Miriam is one of Managing Intellectual Property’s "IP Stars" for patents and trade marks and was one of the world’s Top 250 Women in IP in 2020. Miriam has been involved in IP policy and law reform and is a member of the Intellectual Property Committee of the Law Council of Australia, the Enforcement Committee of the International Trademark Association and the AI & New Emerging Technologies and Women In IP Committees of the Intellectual Property Owners' Association. Miriam is also the Permanent Secretary for the Oceania Registry of the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
