np22_david-rountree1.jpgI came into the firm with a view I was destined to be a litigator, but I ended up becoming hooked on the challenges of helping clients navigate implementation and execution of complex projects, alongside the practical application of the law.

Working in a space which grapples with new and emerging technology and its interaction with the law offers me the opportunity to work on interesting, challenging puzzles every day – I'm often helping companies make decisions or implement projects that can have a very direct impact on people and the things they really care about: their privacy, security, personal information and choices as consumers. It can be deeply personal work, with tangible outcomes and impacts.

I help clients use data to create new products, improve customer experience and offer their consumers choice, while balancing against a complex regulatory landscape. Navigating a path to a commercial outcome isn’t always straightforward and sometimes requires you to go beyond compliance and to consider options in the context of an organisation's values, brand and the expectations of consumers and wider society. Part of my job is to steer clients through this, and help them manage risks and develop processes and frameworks to make better decisions about the use of data and its impact.

I've recently relocated to Brisbane to lead and grow the firm's technology team there. I'm really energised by the opportunity to work with a great team and to develop our practice. I think to invest in people and see the results come out the other side is one of the most rewarding parts of my job and what's kept me at Allens for more than a decade.
