np22_rebecca-pleming1.jpgI became interested in the law while pursuing a degree in psychology. It became clear to me that I was far less interested in the clinical aspects of the degree and fascinated by the subjects that interfaced with law, such as forensic psychology and witness interviewing techniques. From then on, there was no looking back - I knew a career in the law was the right path for me.

After finishing law school, I worked as a criminal lawyer at the NSW Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions. It was in this role that I discovered a love of litigation that has stayed with me for my entire career. When I decided to apply for a graduate position at a law firm, I undertook a rotation in environment and planning law and I instantly loved it. It was the kind of aspirational work I was looking for - making a positive contribution to the ever-changing shape of our cities and communities. I enjoy the future focus this work offers and working with talented architects, engineers and other environmental experts. After all these years as an environment and planning lawyer, I still get a buzz when I drive past developments that I have helped bring into being.

I joined Allens after a period of parental leave and have worked part-time so that I can balance my work life with caring for my four-year-old son. The firm has been incredibly supportive. It's wonderful to be a part of this work culture. As good as that is, I'm a big believer in calling out the challenges working parents face and admitting when it's hard. I want to be a leader that sets that example. Our home life is a part of us and we can support each other at work when it gets tough, if we're open about it.
