About Candace Wu PhD
Candace is a patent attorney registered to practise in Australia and New Zealand. She is known for her commercial approach to protecting and navigating IP, with particular technical expertise in the biotechnology and broader life sciences fields.
She has worked with small and large entities, including some of the most recognizable global pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies. She is experienced in providing patentability advice, drafting patent specifications, prosecuting patent applications in Australia, New Zealand and overseas, defending patents, managing patent portfolios and securing extensions of term for patents covering pharmaceutical products.
Candace graduated from the University of Auckland with a senior prize and honors degree in Pharmacology. She holds a PhD in Pharmacology from the University of Melbourne and the Florey Institute of Neuroscience. Her doctoral thesis examined the effects of hormones on cognition in preclinical models of neuropsychiatric disorders. She received an award for the most highly regarded PhD thesis at the Florey Institute and was subsequently recruited by Johns Hopkins University (Baltimore, USA) as a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Psychiatry. During her postdoctoral research she gained extensive technical skills in human cell models. She also developed a non-invasive system to capture mature neurons from living human subjects and investigated the effects of transcription factor mutation on protein aggregation.
Candace has studied at the Melbourne Business School and obtained a graduate certificate in commercialization with a commendation award. This experience has given her a boarder perspective on the implications of science and its translational possibilities.
She is an active member of the Institute of Patent and Trade Mark Attorneys (IPTA), International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property (AIPPI), and Intellectual Property Society of Australia and New Zealand (IPSANZ).
