Remembering Bill Gummow

It's with great sadness that we share the passing of former partner The Hon. William (Bill) Gummow AC KC, who died in September aged 83.

Over a career spanning more than six decades, Bill served as a solicitor, barrister, judge, scholar and teacher, helping shape the profession through his practice, judicial decisions and legal scholarship.

Bill joined Allen Allen & Hemsley in 1966 after graduating from the University of Sydney with first class honours and became a partner just three years later at the age of 26. During his time with the firm, he built a broad practice spanning intellectual property, commercial law, trusts and revenue law before later moving to the Bar.

His judicial career took him to the Federal Court of Australia in 1986 and then to the High Court of Australia in 1995, where he served for 17 years. Widely regarded as one of Australia's leading jurists, his influence continues to be felt across many areas of Australian law.

Beyond the courts, Bill made an extraordinary contribution to legal education. He lectured in equity at the University of Sydney for decades and helped shape generations of lawyers through his teaching.

His scholarship was equally influential. In 1975, alongside fellow former Allens partner John Lehane and jurist and judge Roddy Meagher, he co-authored Equity: Doctrines and Remedies. More than 50 years later, Meagher, Gummow & Lehane remains one of Australia's most respected legal texts and continues to be cited by practitioners, academics and courts across the country.

Bill's achievements reflect a long tradition of service to the law, legal education and the broader profession. His career serves as a reminder of the impact that Allens people can have beyond the firm through their contribution to the development of the law and the institutions that support it.

Bill leaves behind an extraordinary legacy through the judgments he delivered, the scholarship he produced and the many legal minds he influenced throughout his life.

Vale Bill.
