Working for government

Allens has a long history of acting for government. We understand the issues that are important to government and the constraints under which government operates.

We have been involved in many public sector projects that were the first of their type in their respective jurisdictions. We provide strategic advice to government at all levels. Our advice has often included procedures and strategies for ensuring adherence to probity requirements and minimising commercial and financial risks to government.

Where appropriate, we take a 'whole of government' approach to our advice.

We have acted for numerous Australian government departments and agencies including: in New South Wales, the NSW Treasury on the sale of Freightcorp, the largest transfer of rail assets to private hands in Australia's history; in Victoria, the Department of Infrastructure on the privatisation of the public transport network; in Queensland, Queensland Treasury on the complex, high-profile and politically sensitive Suncorp-Metway-QIDC merger and the subsequent selldown of Suncorp Metway; in Western Australia, the State Solicitor's Office on the high-profile 140 William Street office tower development in the Perth CBD; the Public Transport Authority on the construction of the Perth to Mandurah urban passenger railway, the State's largest infrastructure project to date; and the Department of Planning & Infrastructure on the development of the deep harbour port at Oakajee for the mid west mining sector; and in South Australia, the Department of Treasury and Finance on the privatisation of its electricity industry, one of the largest and most complex restructuring, design and privatisations of an industry ever undertaken in Australia.

We have significant experience advising governments in all aspects of public private partnership transactions and have an excellent understanding of the principles and policy issues involved in such projects.

We are currently working with governments across Asia to implement various reform projects, including Indonesia, China, Philippines and Papua New Guinea.
