Celebrating 100 years with Ford

A century of partnership

In a landmark event last month, Partners Rob Walker, Hannah Biggins and Matthew McCarthy joined Ford in celebrating an extraordinary milestone—100 years of the automobile giant’s presence in Australia. This occasion was doubly significant as it also marked a century-long relationship between Allens and Ford, a testament to enduring corporate alliances.

The festivities drew an eclectic crowd comprising die-hard enthusiasts, influential dealers, corporate partners, racing legends and members of the Ford dynasty. Among them was Bill Ford, great-grandson of Henry Ford and current Executive Chairman. The event featured an impressive display of vehicles that underscored Ford’s rich heritage—from the vintage models in its heritage fleet to the futuristic Mustang Mach-E EV. Cars immortalised in the Mad Max films stood alongside the robust Ford Everest and pivotal GT sedans that cemented Ford’s place in Australian motorsport. Additionally, attendees witnessed the unveiling of the new Ranger Super Duty.

"It was a great day of celebrating the history of Ford in Australia—their journey is nothing short of iconic. We are proud to have been part of this remarkable story since its inception" - Rob Walker, Partner

A longstanding partnership

Ford has been a valued client ever since it ventured into the Australian market in 1925. At that time, our firm operated under the name Arthur Robinson & Co., one of four entities that later amalgamated into what is now Allens. We initially provided legal counsel on establishing their business operations and securing necessary trademarks—a partnership that has evolved over decades to encompass a wide array of legal services.

The first vehicle to emerge from Ford's Geelong factory was none other than the ‘Model T’, a car that indelibly altered Australia's transportation landscape by making automobiles accessible to ordinary citizens. Yet early car ownership came with its challenges; new owners often spent days trying to start their cars before realising they required petrol! Salesmen frequently doubled as driving instructors—a role complicated when teaching farmers who expected their cars to behave like horses.

This centenary provides not just a moment for reflection but also an opportunity to appreciate the longevity and depth of our collaboration with Ford. Our shared history encapsulates more than mere transactional interactions; it embodies mutual growth and sustained success.

For those keen on delving deeper into our rich legacy with clients like Ford, "Allens: The First 200 Years" offers a comprehensive chronicle.
