What we are reporting on and why

In our second year of reporting on our impact, we continue to focus on the areas that matter most to us as a law firm. These topics reflect our values, responsibilities and the ways we contribute to a more just, inclusive and sustainable society.

  • Access to justice: through our pro bono work, we support disadvantaged people and NGOs with legal issues, promoting justice and human rights.
  • Climate action: we are working towards our goal of halving our gross GHG emissions by FY30, (from an FY19 baseline) to contribute to the global challenge of reaching net zero emissions by 2050.
  • Diversity and inclusion: inclusion and diversity are important enablers of our firm strategy and our ability to deliver on key priorities. We are committed to continuing to build an inclusive people experience and growing our diverse workforce.
  • Ethics and governance: our lawyers uphold high professional standards and their obligations to the courts. We are committed to ethical conduct and strong governance role-modelled by our leadership team.
  • Responsible sourcing: our sourcing program promotes ethical, environmentally friendly procurement.

We report on these areas under the categories of environment, social and governance (ESG), guided by UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Global Compact.

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals

The SDGs are a call to action to 'develop innovative solutions to some of the world's most complex societal and environmental challenges'. More information about the SDGs can be found on the United Nations website. The actions of businesses are crucial to reaching these goals and we recognise that we have a role to play.

The SDGs are interconnected—progress on one goal can have a significant impact on progress in meeting others. To monitor our contribution, throughout the report we have mapped our activity and initiatives back to the SDGs we believe to be relevant to Allens.

The United Nations Global Compact

The United Nations Global Compact (UNGC)—to which Allens has been a signatory since its creation in 2001—is also closely linked to the SDGs. It serves as a voluntary initiative to encourage businesses and organisations to adopt sustainable and socially responsible practices across the areas of human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption.
