Joshua Anderson
Joshua is a partner specialising in complex commercial disputes, including class actions, regulatory investigations, insurance matters and professional indemnity claims. He is driven by helping clients anticipate litigation risk and navigate high-stakes disputes with clarity and confidence.
Throughout my career, I’ve been fortunate to have had many remarkable mentors within the firm. One of the most pivotal has been Allens partner Louise Jenkins, who has played a crucial role in my journey to partnership. That relationship came about almost entirely by chance. While working as a graduate lawyer, we struck up a conversation one evening when Louise found me surrounded in folders, hole-punching documents for a brief to counsel. I must have made a good impression, as when I later rotated into the disputes practice, I was paired with Louise and we have been working together ever since!
Early on in my career, I worked on a significant insurance claim with over a billion dollars in losses. In an intense two-year period, we travelled to the United States twice for witness interviews and strategic meetings, followed by two mediations in Singapore, ultimately resolving the matter with the entire insurance market. This experience was a formative one. The opportunity to work so closely with the client, the complexity of the legal and strategic issues, and our ability to steer the matter to a commercial resolution were deeply satisfying. This cemented my passion for Disputes work.
My approach to client service is rooted in trust and connection. I believe that building enduring relationships with clients is essential. Clients come to Allens because they know we pride ourselves on providing exceptional service even in the most challenging 'make or break' moments. A huge part of this is doing our utmost to understand our clients’ businesses and anticipate their problems. Big litigation can be cyclonic at times. Our aim is to instil some order to the chaos so that clients can navigate complex situations with clarity and confidence.
One of the most rewarding parts of my role is mentoring the next generation of lawyers. It's a privilege to watch people grow in confidence and capability. Seeing a graduate on their first day and then again just a few months later – more assured, more curious, and more thoughtful – is incredibly satisfying. In the same way that I have been the beneficiary of great mentors, I am deeply committed to paying this forward.
My journey to partnership has been an immensely rewarding one. I am grateful to do work that challenges me, matters to our clients, and allows me to give back. I look forward to the next chapter.
