Overseas opportunitiesAs well as being a chance to extend your experience, working overseas is a great opportunity to travel and learn about other cultures and countries. If you are contemplating working overseas at any stage of your career at Allens, there are a number of short and long-term secondment options available. International secondments may involve either working at one of our 11 Asia Pacific offices and affiliated Asian law firms, or being appointed to one of a number of other international law firms or to a client with an international presence. Working in AsiaOur Asian offices have a practice profile that includes corporate and commercial, litigation, insolvency, energy, resources and infrastructure, finance and banking, and communications and technology. Around 40 junior lawyers, senior associates and partners are presently seconded to our Asia Pacific offices. The offices are smaller and are permanently staffed with local lawyers who bring their own talent and experience. The smaller office environment also broadens our lawyers' range of skills to include enhanced project ownership and more client contact. If you join the firm as a graduate or articled clerk in one of the Australian offices, your first two years are essentially a training period where you will rotate through two departments. It is preferable for junior lawyers considering working in Asia to have spent at least the first few years working in Australia. In some locations in Asia it is a local regulatory requirement for lawyers to have two years' post admission experience. While it is not essential to have another language, we keep an eye out for lawyers proficient in the Chinese language, in either Mandarin or Cantonese, to support our Hong Kong and Mainland China initiatives in Asia. Business in Hong Kong is generally done in English and the Chinese companies we work with often do their business in English. The staff who speak Chinese in these offices can assist with the checking of documents, reading of legislation and help with translations and negotiations. While on secondment to one of our Asia Pacific offices, you will have continued on-the-job training, as well as access to learning and development resources from Australia, including professional development programs, coaching from senior lawyers and partners and continuing legal education. If you are interested in finding out more about working in Asia, read about Krista Bowie's experiences or speak to Melanie Turner, Head of People & Development, Asia on +852 2903 6226 or email Melanie.Turner@aar.com.au. years to travel and work overseas. In some instances, we have helped lawyers
find employment in the city of their choice. The firm has helped people like
Andrew Finch, who was a senior associate in the Corporate/Commercial department. Andrew moved to London with his wife and children and worked at Linklaters for almost two years before returning to Allens and being promoted to partner.
See our experienced lawyers page for more information about secondments.
