Experienced lawyersAlthough many people first join Allens as summer clerks or law graduates, the firm also recruits qualified lawyers, both from within Australia and overseas. We look for well-rounded people with more than one year's experience and with the expertise to help us build our business in specific practice areas. The firm pays relocation costs for overseas and interstate recruits, assists with short-term accommodation, arranges visas and takes care of requalification and admission requirements. New lawyers take part in the firm's comprehensive induction program and are allocated a 'buddy' to help them settle in. Salaries at Allens are highly competitive, reflecting the calibre of our lawyers. Positions vacantVisit our positions vacant page to browse current positions and apply for any of interest. SecondmentsSecondments are encouraged and supported at Allens and with around 20 staff at any one time seconded to clients and around 60 between offices, we regard secondments as integral to the continued development of our lawyers. We also have a strong commitment to the community and regularly provide secondees to pro bono organisations. Our reputation and client base enable us to offer a wide range of opportunities for secondments to corporations, government departments and legal offices throughout the Asia Pacific region. Regular requests are made by clients to assist their in-house legal teams with specific projects, providing additional legal assistance and to cover leave. Apart from establishing contacts, client secondments offer insights into the way clients and other organisations approach transactions and litigation, and how they work with the law firms they brief. Client secondments often mean working with a small team of in-house lawyers, providing a great opportunity to work in a non-legal environment. During this time, our secondees gain an understanding of the commercial aspects of transactions and witness first-hand how our clients operate. Interstate secondments allow lawyers to spend time in other offices, getting to know their colleagues and working on a variety of matters. Our Australian and Asia Pacific offices may also require additional assistance on transactions and request legal staff with particular expertise. The firm will provide assistance for short and long term secondments to other offices by organising visas where necessary, flights, accommodation, allowances and flights home. For more information on working overseas, see our pages on overseas opportunities. Some of the clients that our lawyers have been seconded to are:
Leave of absenceWe understand that young lawyers sometimes need to take time out. With that in mind, we grant leave of absence for up to two years so that lawyers can pursue other professional opportunities. Working in London and New York law firms or completing an honours thesis in history are just some examples of how our lawyers have used leave of absence. No matter what you're working at during your leave of absence, the firm does like to keep in touch with its lawyers through its structured alumni program. |
