Anita Thompson

Anita is a competition partner advising clients on a broad range of competition and consumer law issues. She is energised by helping clients navigate regulatory reform and shape strategies that stand up to scrutiny.

At school I loved being in the Mock Trial team and the challenge of a good argument (as my parents would attest!). But my path into legal practice wasn’t exactly linear. After university, I first worked as a management consultant for a number of years. I was fascinated by business and enjoyed the work, but I never quite let go of the idea of becoming a lawyer. Eventually, I made the pivot, starting out in litigation before gravitating toward competition law, where I found a natural fit in the intersection of legal reasoning and economic analysis.

I advise clients on a broad range of competition and consumer law issues. It’s a space that’s constantly evolving. I enjoy helping clients navigate the complexities, particularly now, as we prepare for once-in-a-generation merger reforms and anticipate significant regulatory shifts in the digital and tech sectors. These changes will reshape the legal landscape, and clients need someone beside them who understands the risks and can help chart a path forward.

For me, exceptional client service starts with listening and being curious. It sounds simple, but it’s fundamental. When you truly understand a client’s business and what they’re trying to achieve, you can anticipate their needs and deliver advice that’s tailored to achieving the best outcome from both a legal and commercial perspective. That kind of service requires a cohesive, integrated and collaborative team that is empowered at every level. Many of the matters I work on span multiple practice areas, so cross-practice collaboration is essential.

Clients increasingly expect their lawyers to be more than just technical experts. They want advisers who are strategic partners; people who can work alongside them, understand their goals and help them get there. That’s where my background in consulting has been invaluable. It’s given me a broader perspective and a deep appreciation for the importance of commercial context.

One of the most formative experiences in my career was stepping into a leadership role on a significant competition law litigation. It was a critical turning point, not just in terms of responsibility, but in how I saw myself as a leader. I’ve been fortunate to work with exceptional mentors who modelled thoughtful, generous leadership. That’s inspired me to do the same: to support and develop the next generation of lawyers in my team and to help create an environment where people feel valued and empowered.

Over the course of my career, I’ve seen a real shift in what leadership looks like. There’s a stronger focus now on sustainability and enabling our lawyers to create a career that works alongside life outside the office. I see that as a good thing. We’re more intentional about supporting our people and building a culture where feedback is open, honest and constructive.

I love working with switched on, motivated people and being part of a culture that values curiosity, collaboration and growth. I’m energised by the opportunity to mentor others, just as I’ve been mentored. Having learned from those who came before, helping those who come next is something I really value.
