Nick advises on a wide range of financing transactions, with his main areas of practice being project finance (including infrastructure and PPPs), acquisition finance, real estate finance, corporate finance and restructuring / distressed debt transactions.

In the project finance and infrastructure sector, recent transactions include advising:

  • the financiers of the $2 billion Sydney Light Rail Project;
  • the financiers of the $4 billion Wiggins Island Coal Export Terminal;
  • the financiers of the $2 billion New Royal Adelaide Hospital;
  • the financiers to bidding consortiums on Phase 1 and Phase 2 of the NSW Social and Affordable Housing Project;
  • on bids for other recent major PPP projects such as the Cross River Rail PPP Project, SA Courts Project, Queensland Schools II Project, Sunshine Coast University Hospital, Gold Coast Rapid Transit Project and Peninsula Link Road Project; and
  • on numerous student accommodation projects (including at University of Melbourne, Edith Cowan University, UWS, Macquarie University and Murdoch University).

Project finance transactions he's advised on in the mining, oil & gas and power sectors include the:

  • Phu Kham Copper-Gold Project;
  • Kanmantoo Copper-Gold Project;
  • $735m Worsley Steam Plant Project;
  • financing of NZOG's interests in the Tui Oil Project and Kupe Gas Project; and
  • Avebury Nickel Project.

Significant acquisition financing transactions he's advised on include:

  • the leveraged buyout of LBNCo;
  • Providence Equity Partners' acquisition of Study Group;
  • the privatisations of the NSW Land and Property Information, Land Use Victoria and the Port of Brisbane;
  • bids for the privatisations of the Port of Newcastle, SA Land Titles and NSW Lotteries; and
  • the APA spinoffs Energy Infrastructure Investments and GDI Allgas Gas Network.

Nick also advises on numerous corporate finance transactions, particularly across the agribusiness and mining sectors.

Nick also regularly advises on restructuring / distressed debt transactions, including:

  • acting for RBS on the sale of its debt exposure in the Cross City Tunnel to Transurban; and
  • acting on the purchase or sale of several loan portfolio transactions (including the recent RBS and BOSI loan portfolios).

Nick was selected by his peers for inclusion in The Best Lawyers in Australia in the fields of Banking and Finance Law and Project Finance and Development Practice and is also listed in the Doyle's Guide – Leading Banking & Finance Lawyers NSW.

He regularly presents on topics within his areas of expertise, including at the recent Banking and Financial Services Law Association Conference, as a facilitator of the APLMA documentation training courses and a lecturer for the Sydney University Faculty of Law course 'Advanced Financing Techniques'.
