About Joel Barrett
Joel commenced as a lawyer at Allens in 2009. He specialises in intellectual property, and acts for Australian and overseas clients at all stages of the creative, industrial and innovative processes, including development, protection, commercialisation, enforcement and litigation.
Joel has been recognised by Managing Intellectual Property's IP Stars as a Notable Practitioner, and by IAM's Patent 1000 as an 'ambidextrous IP lawyer [who] matches abundant IP disputes know-how with keen commercialisation acumen' and 'whose finely drafted contracts and staunch representation have earned him loyal fans'.
Joel advises clients across a range of sectors, including technology, healthcare, food and beverage, energy and mining, media and entertainment, real estate, private capital and sport. His experience includes the following:
- Acting in significant copyright, trade mark and patent litigation in the Federal Court of Australia for clients such as Redbubble, AstraZeneca and Pro-Pac Packaging.
- Acting in technology disputes for clients such as Infosys.
- Drafting, negotiating and advising on complex IP assignment and licensing arrangements for clients such as Pfizer, Beam Suntory and Commonwealth Bank of Australia, including as part of sponsorship, software development, manufacturing and distribution and other commercial agreements.
- Advising on the IP aspects of significant mergers, acquisitions, restructures and investments for clients such as Pacific Equity Partners, BAE Systems and Platinum Equity Advisors, including conducting complex due diligence.
- Advising on major trade promotions, product launches and advertising campaigns for clients such as Visa, PepsiCo and Heineken.
- Advising on IP protection and registration strategies for clients such as ISPT, Little Athletics Australia and the Council of Law Reporting for NSW.
- Advising on the Australian copyright legislative landscape and proposed reforms, particularly as they relate to new media, online content, artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies, for clients such as Canva, eBay and Redbubble.
- Advising on domain name issues, including in relation to cybersquatting.
Joel also sits on the management committee of the Copyright Society of Australia.
