About Alexandra Mason

Alexandra is a commercial litigator with extensive experience acting in commercial disputes, class actions, investigations, and commissions of inquiry. Alexandra has acted for some of Australia's largest corporations on matters of major reputational, financial, and strategic significance. Her ability to understand the broader commercial considerations on a matter, together with her strategic and pragmatic approach, has been consistently recognised and appreciated by her clients.

Alexandra has acted on a wide range of complex litigations, including matters involving breaches of financial services laws, white collar crime, misleading or deceptive conduct, market misconduct, and breaches of directors' and officers' duties. Most recently, Alexandra acted for Westpac in its defence of penalty proceedings brought by ASIC alleging insider trading and unconscionable conduct in connection with the Bank's hedging activities during the 2016 sale of NSW's electricity assets (the Ausgrid transaction).

Alexandra regularly acts for clients across multiple sectors on significant investigations, including investigations involving Australian and international regulators, and has related experience in crisis management and remediation issues.

  • Acting for Westpac on investigations and regulatory enforcement proceedings including:
    • proceedings brought by the CEO of AUSTRAC alleging breaches of AML/CTF laws;
    • proceedings brought by ASIC alleging breaches of superannuation laws;
    • proceedings brought by ASIC alleging misleading or deceptive conduct and breaches of financial services laws;
    • proceedings brought by ASIC alleging manipulation of Australia's most important financial benchmark (the BBSW proceedings); and
    • APRA's review into governance, culture and accountability.
  • Advising Crown Resorts Limited and its subsidiaries on its response to the NSW Casino Control Act Inquiry report and the Victorian Royal Commission.
  • Acting for Aveo Group Limited on a dispute with Springfield Pty Ltd regarding the development of a retirement living complex.
  • Advising a major, international investment company on a confidential investigation into potential market misconduct by a trading team.
  • Advising PwC on matters arising out of an investigation by the Tax Practitioners Board regarding breaches of confidentiality.
  • Acting on commissions of inquiry including the Royal Commission into Misconduct in the Banking, Superannuation and Financial Services Industry, the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety, and the Royal Commission into Trade Union Governance and Corruption.

  • Acting for online hotel aggregator, Hotels Combined, in proceedings alleging breach of contract by Skyscanner Ltd.
