Allens advises on Australian-first dementia village

19 July 2017

Allens has provided pro bono advice to Social Ventures Australia on the financing of the ground-breaking Korongee dementia care village.

The first of its kind in Australia, the village is designed to recreate life experiences for people living with dementia, allowing residents to feel at home and wander freely within a safe and supported environment.

Korongee is a partnership between Glenview, HESTA and Social Ventures Australia, and will be built with assistance from the Commonwealth Government.

'We are delighted to have provided advice to Social Ventures Australia on the financing of this cutting edge model of care, which will ease the burden for individuals and families living with dementia and forge a path for new treatment options,' said Jo Folan, lead partner on the advice from Allens.

Based in the Tasmanian suburb of Glenorchy, the village will be designed to emulate a typical cul-de-sac streetscape.

It will include 15 demographically tailored homes as well as a supermarket, cinema, café, beauty salon and gardens.

Korongee draws on international best practice models in which residents live longer, eat better and take fewer medications.

'We look forward to watching the Korongee initiative unfold, as well as continuing our work with Social Ventures Australia,' Jo said.

Allens provided more than 28,000 hours of pro bono legal advice in FY2017 as part of its commitment to alleviating disadvantage, improving access to justice, promoting reconciliation and protecting the natural environment.
